First off, a MASSIVE thank you to everyone who endured 100+ degree temperatures during the Micro Expo on October 3. Many people wisely chose to stay home and be safe. But even though the event was a bit smaller because of this, it was still a success and a huge amount of fun for the people who made it out.

Most local clubs were still represented…CVARC was showing off their new comms trailer while W6CSM led a Field Strength Meter build session that was pretty cool. Lots of other good stuff too. Simi Settlers were well represented by the AREDN Mesh people, including K6MFQ who made several heroic hikes up the local hill to place and aim antennas and a camera that gave a live HD birds-eye view of the event, all with ham radio. Conejo Valley Maker Space was once again making parents nervous by helping kids build Morse Code Practice Oscillators. And VCARS, led by AG6AG, dealt with the Simulated Emergency Test in spectacular fashion.

AMSAT gave a presentation by K6KH, while he and W2AYZ were demonstrating satellite contacts throughout the day.

The ARRLS sent Southwestern Division Director and Vice Director, Dick Norton N6AA and John Kitchens, NS6X. We held out 2026 Santa Barbara Section meeting at the end of the event. There are a lot of plans for the next year for ways that local ARRL representatives can help the hobby grow and stay fun that we are working on, especially related to college amateur radio clubs and public events like this Expo.

And what about 2027? Keith W6KME and Jason Miller KM6PSZ (of the CSUCI club) are working on something different yet the same…the first ham convention in Ventura County in almost 30 years. It will include the Expo, plus a lot more. It’s already on the calendar, October 2-3, 2027, again on the CSUCI campus. As we can say more, we will. Mark those dates now! We plan on the first weekend of October being a permanent date for this.
